Not too long ago, I was having lunch with a friend and we started talking about his pride in being a Luddite and how technology was really not useful in his business (I won’t go into what kind of business to protect the innocent here). I’ve heard this from him before and I usually just brush it off. Later in the conversation he was asking about how he could best organize his customer list to help keep better track of them, I asked him how he did it today. He reached into, what I call a 100 pound briefcase of stuff and pulled out a mess of note cards. On each note card he had meticulously written names, dates of service, address, phone numbers, etc. I looked at him square in the eye and said “Have you ever thought of putting this in just a simple spreadsheet?” Unfortunately, the conversation didn’t evolve much beyond how he didn’t trust technology and it was important to know about each of your customers.
As the world continues to evolve at an accelerated pace, technology is an important part of our everyday lives. From smartphones and laptops to social media and cloud computing, technology has revolutionized the way we live, work, and communicate. For business owners and managers who are not technologically savvy, this can be a major challenge. Without an understanding of what technology can offer, those folks are destined for failure, and risk being quickly shoved aside in the future for companies that do adapt.
The question is, why is being technologically ignorant so dangerous? It is important to understand the reasons why business owners and key drivers need to embrace technology if they want to succeed in the modern world.
First and foremost, technology is essential for communication. Email, instant communication, and video conferencing have become the norm in today’s business world. Without an understanding of these tools, businesses will struggle to communicate effectively with their employees, partners, and customers. This can lead to misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and ultimately, lost revenue.
In addition to communication, technology can also help businesses to streamline their operations and improve efficiency. From automated processes to data analytics, technology can help businesses to identify inefficiencies, eliminate bottlenecks, and make better decisions. Without an understanding of these tools, business owners and bosses will struggle to compete in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
Another reason why technology is so important for business owners is that it can help them to stay ahead. As new technologies emerge, businesses that are quick to adopt them will be able to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals. By embracing technology, business owners and bosses can position themselves as innovators and thought leaders, which can help them to attract new customers and partners.
Of course, for those businesses that are not technologically savvy, the thought of embracing technology can be daunting. It can be tempting to stick with what you know and avoid the risks and challenges that come with digital transformation. However, this approach is short-sighted and can lead to failure in the long run.
The good news is that there are plenty of resources available to help business owners and bosses to become more technologically literate. From online courses to workshops and conferences, there are many ways to learn about the latest trends and tools in technology. By investing in education and training, business owners and bosses can stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their industry, and position themselves for success in the future.
Being technologically ignorant is a major risk for business owners and bosses in the modern world. Without an understanding of what technology can offer, they are destined for failure, and risk being quickly shoved aside in the future. By embracing technology, business owners and bosses can improve communication, streamline operations, stay ahead of the curve, and position themselves for success in the long run. So, if you’re a business owner or boss who is not technologically savvy, it’s time to take action and embrace the power of technology.
